When we started planning our honeymoon, we wanted something adventurous, beautiful, and affordable. Costa Rica called to us with its lush jungles, volcanoes, warm beaches, and “pura vida” spirit. We spent 10 dreamy days hopping from the rainforest town of La Fortuna, to the beachy vibes of Jaco, and finishing off with a quiet escape to Manuel Antonio. Here’s our full itinerary—budget-friendly and full of joy.

⸻
Day 1-3: La Fortuna – Waterfalls, Volcano Views & Hot Springs
We flew into San José and rented a small SUV (4WD recommended!) for the drive to La Fortuna. It took about 3 hours with some jaw-dropping scenery along the way.
Where We Stayed:
Selina La Fortuna – A stylish, affordable hostel-hotel hybrid with private rooms. Great vibe, pool, and walking distance to everything.
Cost: ~$60/night
What We Did:
• La Fortuna Waterfall – Hike down and swim in the stunning turquoise water. ($18 entry)
• Arenal Volcano National Park – Easy hikes with views of the volcano and hanging bridges.
• Free Hot Springs – We skipped the pricey resorts and went to El Choyin, a natural riverside hot spring (free!).
• Local Eats – Soda La Hormiga is an awesome spot for $5–7 meals.
⸻
Day 4-7: Jaco – Surf, Sunsets & Ocean Breezes
Next, we made our way to Jaco, a laid-back Pacific coast town known for surfing and sunsets. The drive took about 4.5 hours, but we stopped at the Crocodile Bridge in Tarcoles to stretch and stare (from a safe distance!).
Where We Stayed:
Hotel Perico Azul – Affordable, charming, and run by friendly locals.
Cost: ~$75/night
What We Did:
• Jaco Beach – Laid-back and great for beginner surfing (we rented boards for ~$10/hour).
• Explore Town – Coffee shops, local markets, and the sweetest fruit smoothies.
• Sunset at Miro Ruins – A local secret. Hike up for epic views and graffiti art.
• Day Trip to Playa Herradura – Quieter, calmer water just 15 minutes away.
⸻
Day 8-10: Manuel Antonio – Wildlife & White Sand
We ended our trip in Manuel Antonio, just 1.5 hours south of Jaco. It’s more peaceful but full of magic: sloths, monkeys, and some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen.
Where We Stayed:
Millenium Manuel Antonio – Right near the park entrance and the beach.
Cost: ~$85/night
What We Did:
• Manuel Antonio National Park – Go early! You’ll see monkeys, sloths, toucans, and iguanas. ($16 entry)
• Espadilla Beach – Soft white sand, calm waves, and dreamy sunsets.
• Homemade breakfasts – We bought local fruit and bread to keep costs low (and mornings delicious).

Final Thoughts
Costa Rica was everything we hoped our honeymoon would be—romantic, wild, peaceful, and full of life. We swam under waterfalls, saw sloths in the trees, ate amazing food, and soaked in the pura vida vibe. And we did it all without breaking the bank.
If you’re dreaming of a honeymoon that blends adventure with affordability, Costa Rica is it. Just bring your swimsuits, a sense of wonder, and maybe a little bug spray.
